The average golfer finishes the swing with the body in flexion. The main reason for this is because they are taught to turn the hips very fast at the beginning of the downswing, which causes the weight to go backward and the hips to stay in flexion. As a result, the average golfer needs to learn how to extend more and faster in order to hit the ball higher and farther.
With this extension drill, we work on tucking the hips under the torso and raising the belt line, all with the weight forward. This teaches you how to use your body essentially as a catapult.

Practice Drill
First, we start by placing all of the weight forward with the handle forward and with the arms straight. Then, begin to make some little swings, all with zero accumulation (no bending of the arms- keep them straight throughout the swing). At this point we initiate the extension of the legs, tucking the hips and raising the belt line, finishing the swing with all segments of the body in extension, much like a high jumper extending the body in the middle of jumping.
